How an AC Works
To the average homeowner your air conditioning and heating system may seem like a huge source of stress and confusion and you probably have many questions. For example, what is the condenser and what does the condenser do? What is an air handler and exactly what does air handler do? What is a split central cooling system?
The split system is the most common central cooling system. This system includes an outdoor condenser coil and compressor, and an indoor evaporator coil. The two are usually installed in conjunction with your furnace or air handler. The compressor pumps refrigerant through the system and cools your home.
How does the split central cooling system work?
Once the warm air inside your home blows across the indoor evaporator coil, its’ heat energy transfers to the refrigerant inside the coil. That transfer, in turn, “cools” the air. The refrigerant is pumped back to the compressor where the cycle begins again. The heat absorbed by the refrigerant is moved outside your home while cooled air is blown inside. Moisture that contributes to humidity is also condensed out of the air.
What is central heating?
The furnace is the heating appliance for your central heating system that is usually located in the attic or garage. All furnaces consist of four components: 1) burners that deliver and burn fuel, 2) heat exchangers, 3) a blower and 4) a flue that acts as an exhaust for gaseous by-products. Depending on your needs, you can choose heating systems that run on either gas or oil as fuel, or a hybrid packaged system that can use both fuel types.
How does my central heating system work?
Combustion gases are generated by the burners in your furnace and are passed over a heat exchanger. Air from your home blows across the heat exchanger and is warmed so it can be blown through a duct system and distributed throughout your home.
During the spring season, your heating system works with your central air conditioning. Air is cooled as it’s blown over the cooling coil, and then sent through the same air ducts throughout your home.
